Stan’s WordWit Puzzle™ Contest

Here's the current puzzle:

 

In what very common six-letter word is the letter E pronounced with a "short i" sound (as in "big")?  Hint: The word can be a synonym for one of the words in the previous sentence.

To enter the contest, complete the form below and click the "Submit Entry" key. Three winners will be selected at random from all correct entries.  Each will receive a copy of one of the toughest crosswords Stan has ever published: "The Beast" by Henry Hook. (Includes annotated solution.)
