When, a few years ago, I turned up the the difficulty of
the Saturday Stumpers I create under my own name ("by S.N."), I was
concerned that solvers might mistakenly think every puzzle with my
byline would be difficult. That's why I
concocted two pseudonyms for Newsday Crosswords: "Sally R. Stein" for
easy/early-week puzzles, and "Anna Stiga" for Saturday Stumpers less
difficult than the "by S.N." ones.
Those names weren't just selected at random. The
letters in each pseudonym can be rearranged to spell something pertinent.
