Crossword University FAQs

I’ve just gotten started with crosswords.  Will your classes help a beginner?
Definitely!  I teach the basics every beginner needs to know, as well as how to build your skills to master crosswords of ever-increasing difficulty, no matter what your current abilities are.

Will your classes help me do better in crossword tournaments?
Without a doubt!  In addition to skill-building techniques, I will explain in detail how to do your best in crossword contests, including Will Shortz’s annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament.

Will the crossword activities conflict with shore excursions or meal times?
Never!  Puzzling activities are scheduled only on the days the ship is at sea, between breakfast and lunch, and between lunch and dinner.

My “significant other” isn’t a puzzler.  Does that make any difference?
No.  There are loads of activities for non-puzzlers on the ship while the classes are in session.

I am a single traveler.  Can I get the lower double-occupancy rate?
Yes.  Holland America Line has a unique “cabin share” program. They will attempt to find you a cabin-mate, and if they can't, you'll get a single room at the "per person" double-occupancy rate.  Just ask Special Event Cruises when you call: 1-800-326-0373.

Why do you sail with Holland American Line every year?
Many cruise lines visit the same ports, but after “trying out” other cruise lines in the early years, I found Holland America to clearly be the #1 choice, considering the quality of service, meals, shipboard activities and price.

Is it true what they say about the quality and quantity of food on Holland America ships?
I’m afraid so!   Meals are “all you care to eat,” from the informal Lido deck to the elegant dining room, where the menu and service are on a par with the finest restaurants.
